What does Living Prairie mean?

Living Prairie means that we push ourselves daily to discover how to best utilize and steward the land. We’re farmers who care about not only our families well-being, but the health of the soil that feeds us every day. This care drives our decisions from what crops we raise to the techniques we practice.

Farming Practices

Certified Organic

All land in production is USDA certified organic. We began our transition in 2014 and go above & beyond the requirements.

Cover Crop

Crops are crops, some of them we just don’t harvest. Our goal is to keep living roots in the ground as many days of the year as we can. That includes crops grown for cash as well as those grown for the benefit of the soil.

Crop Rotation

Keeping the soil in good health includes rotating crops to return and balance out nutrient levels. Some of our fields don’t see the same crop for 5 years.

Crop Diversity

Living Prairie grows a range of broadleaf and grass crops from pumpkins to heirloom corn. This diversity helps not just the soil but the bugs and critters who live in it!
